atc2met receives Mode-S and ADS-B messages from aircraft and estimates horizontal wind from ground and air velocity vectors. Temperature is derived from true airspeed and Mach. Daily v2 files contain means, counts, within-bin variability and processing metadata.

Accepted-sample-weighted regional summaries use all observed H3 cells in 1 km altitude layers. The selected H3 cell values above retain 250 m bins. Both use the same UTC window; missing observations stay empty.

Source products remain at 10-minute resolution. Windows align within one UTC date; 24:00 is 00:00 on the following day. No observations from another date are substituted.

Daily products are generated separately; the 5-minute check does not generate new observations.

01 / THE IDEA

Meteorological estimates from aircraft radio signals

Aircraft transmit position and flight parameters through Mode-S and ADS-B. Ground receivers collect these messages; processing estimates wind and temperature, applies acceptance criteria, and aggregates accepted samples into daily products.

01

Listen

Compact ground receivers capture Mode-S and ADS-B signals.

1090 MHz radio
02

Decode

Aircraft position, velocity, heading and airspeed are resolved.

Trajectory reconstruction
03

Reconstruct

Subtract air velocity from ground velocity for wind; use true airspeed and Mach for temperature.

Atmospheric retrieval
04

Publish

Accepted observations are grouped by UTC time, pressure altitude and H3 cell.

View wind and temperature by time and altitude

Compare one to 30 UTC days using time–height sections and H3 pressure-altitude layers. Missing days remain marked. Use the daily inspector for individual cells, values and counts.

Data coverage, sampling and processing history

The v2 product carries its analysis version, site configuration, creation time, sample counts and aircraft-bin counts inside every NetCDF file. The portal exposes that provenance next to the data.

atc2met remains a research-stage observing system. Data quality and availability vary with aircraft traffic, receiver coverage and retrieval conditions.
